We had the cloth measured, and the pitch almost hot enough to spread, before Jorge scuffed over to us.

“Apologies,” he mumbled, still sleepy.

Peter slapped him on the back. “No worries, Jorgie. We’ve no bells here.”

My mind immediately went to the bell which had rung of its own accord on the ship, and I could tell by the silence after Peter’s statement a similar thought had crossed their minds, as well. I cleared my throat. “We need a frame for the roof, Jorge, and could use your knotwork.”

He nodded and ran his hand through his beard, mumbling, “Wish I had a razor.”

“Ah! I’ve got one!” Peter dashed off.

Jorge just shook his head. “Didn’t mean right this instant.”

I laughed and moved closer to him. A strange feeling overtook me, as I suddenly realized I’d never initiated contact with any of my lovers. Always I waited for Peter to call me to him, and even in his cabin I would never make the first advance, at least not physically. But now… I reminded myself that Jorge cared for me, and would welcome my attention. I slipped my hand around his ribs, and leaned close, my breath in his beard.

He tilted his head down and kissed me, relieved pleasure washing through me at his acceptance. My kiss seemed to revive his spirits, and soon he was caressing my back and hips with some energy. His mouth tasted stale but not unpleasant, and his hands left a warm path of arousal in their wake. Soon I was writhing against him, and he broke away with a chuckle.

“Sweet one. Damn, you make me feel a man.” He kissed me again, briefly. “But we need to get this shelter built. The air has rain on it.”

I inhaled and found his assessment correct; there was a clear moisture in the air that indicated rain on the way. And I wanted a roof before it arrived. I nodded.

He pulled me back as I made to leave, and whispered roughly in my ear, “Later, I’ll have you.”

I spent the rest of the morning with those words in my mind.
